Mexico golfers take on Centralia, New Bloomfield

The Mexico girls golf team took to the road Thursday, competing at Centralia Golf Course.

“We haven't gotten to play at Centralia's course for a couple years,” said coach Lindsey Yancey, “so when we got an invite earlier in the week we quickly took advantage.”

Lilly Knipfel was the match medalist, shooting a lights-out round of even par (35).

Big second quarter allows Thunderbirds to pull away from Van-Far

Van-Far fell to the North Callaway Thunderbirds 45-0 on Friday in its first home game of the season.

Head coach John Kliewer entered his second season with hopes to improve after a 1-9 record in his first year with Van-Far. Kliewer’s preparation has been stunted early, with his team’s first two games canceled due to complications related to the COVID-19 pandemic.The Indians (0-2) fell 8-6 to Mark Twain in the season opener.

Bulldogs find the answers in first win on home turf

The Mexico Bulldogs defeated the Marshall Owls 28-20 in their first home game of the season.

The game was close throughout — running back Dante Billups ran in his third touchdown with 50 seconds remaining, sealing the win for Mexico.

Turnovers plagued the Bulldogs early, as two early fumbles helped the Owls build a 13-0 lead early in the second quarter.

“It always seemed like we were scrambling and we should have had control of that game, probably from that first kickoff,” Mexico head coach Steve Haag said.

Community beats Cairo, Slater to improve to 4-1

Following its first loss of the season, the Community R-VI softball team got back in the win column this week with a 1-0 win over Cairo on Monday and a 13-2 rout of Slater on Tuesday.

The Trojans had suffered their first loss of the season to Silex on Friday.

In Monday’s game, Emma Angel recorded the win on the mound with six strikeouts. Emmi Johnson went 2 for 3 at the plate.

Knipfel, Rowe claim second in Boonville

The Mexico High School girls golf team has been busy of late, including competing in the Boonville Tournament Sept. 11.

“The Boonville Tournament is one of our favorite events to participate in during golf season,” said coach Lindsey Yancey. “This is an event designed to be a partner golfing competition, the only ‘scramble’ type of fun tournament we do in a season."

Community outscores opponents 44-1 in first two games

It hasn’t taken long for the Community R-VI softball team’s offense to come to life.

In the Trojans’ first two games of the year, they have outscored their opponents 44-1.

In the season opener Sept. 3, they accumulated 18 hits in a 24-0 beating of Hermann and five days later pounded Pilot Grove 20-1.

In the opener, Emma Angel, Emmi Johnson and Brooklyn Glasgow each had three hits for Community. Sarah Angel and Olivia Kuda had two hits apiece in the win.

Van-Far’s Keller tosses no-hitter in season opener

Van-Far’s Devyn Keller had a near perfect start to the season last Thursday.

The Lady Indians kicked off their season with a 12-0 thumping off Louisiana behind a no-hitter from Keller.

The hurler’s only blemish in the game was one walk.

“I am so proud of how the girls played,” head coach Kelly Borchert said. “This year has already been a crazy one and we were just thankful to be out on the field again. We came out hot the first inning and never let up.”

Van-Far collected 14 hits and nine RBIs in the win.

Mexico football trounces Orchard Farm for first win

The Mexico Bulldogs obliterated the Orchard Farm Eagles 60-34 for their first win of the season on Friday.

The Bulldogs and Eagles began the game scoring back and forth, scoring five touchdowns before the five-minute mark in the first quarter.

Holding a 21-20 lead, Mexico scored on a Ty Prince run with just under five minutes remaining in the second quarter and never looked back — the Bulldogs held a double-digit lead for the rest of the game.

Kirksville too much for Bulldogs

The Kirksville softball team jumped ahead early with three runs in the first two innings and never looked back in a 13-1 rout of Mexico on Tuesday.

Coming off a superb performance at the War on the Battlefield Tournament, the offense went silent for the Bulldogs. They managed only one hit and were hurt by nine errors in the loss.

Leading 3-0 after two innings, the Tigers scored three runs in the fourth and added seven in the sixth. They recorded 10 hits in the win.

Mexico boys race to win at home meet

The Mexico boys cross country team raced out to a winning start to the season Saturday.

The Bulldogs captured the team title at the Mexico Invitational as they had five runners place in the top 15, led by sophomore Thomas Peuster who had a fourth-place finish.
