Bulldogs blanked in regular-season finale

The Bulldogs could only manage two hits against Macon ace Brooke Weimer, falling in the softball regular season finale 9-0 at home on Saturday morning.

Highlights were hard to find on a day when bats were silent and Mexico’s defense uncertain at times. Jordyn Thurman put in four solid innings of relief, fanning four and surrendering just two earned runs. Lexie Willer’s running catch in the seventh robbed Macon’s Emma Bruno of extra bases.

Otherwise the Bulldogs never really threatened.

“We let the little things get to us,” observed senior catcher Abby Oetting. “We definitely have some work to do.”

The loss caps a 16-12 fall campaign for Mexico during the regular season. The squad enters district play on Wednesday in Moberly as the three seed, facing sixth seed Southern Boone on Wednesday night. And Saturday’s performance did not dampen the Bulldogs’ determination entering the postseason.

“We’ve played most of them before,” Oetting said of the district field. “I think we have a really good chance.”

“It’s all about the mental game now,” Thurman added. “We have to keep each other up.”
