MLK celebration is Monday

A Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. community celebration will be held at noon Monday, Jan. 18, at the Audrain County Courthouse, Mexico.

Keynote speaker will be Rev. Dr. Faith Allen, Jamison Memorial Temple CME Church. Dr. Allen was raised in Wrightsville, Ark., where her spiritual journey began at Beebe Chapel CME Church; she answered the call to preach in 1990. She attended Bethel College, North Newton, Kan., where she earned a bachelor of arts degree and her teacher’s certification. She received a master of divinity from St. Paul School of Theology in Kansas City and later received her doctor of ministry from United Theological Seminary in Dayton, Ohio, where her field of study was Christian Education and Urban Ministries.
Dr. Allen is a sought-after revivalist and speaker and co-founded the New Generation Youth Choir at Jamison Memorial Temple CME Church in Kansas City.

In July 2014, she was elected to the office of general secretary of evangelism at the general conference of the Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, becoming the first female in the church’s history to be a departmental secretary. She currently serves as pastor of Jamison Memorial Temple CME Church in Kansas City.

The celebration will include music, a scripture reading, prayer and a special presentation from Mexico Middle School. Deb Hill-Haag, Mexico Middle School principal, will serve as mistress of ceremony. Mexico mayor, Rev. Dr. Ayanna Shivers, will attend and read a proclamation. Other participants will include Rachel Owens, Rev. Karl Thomas, Second Missionary Baptist Church; Julie Pappas, Mexico Middle School; Kim Sydenstricker, Mexico Chamber of Commerce; Dr. Tammy Lupardus, Mexico Public Schools; Steve Hobbs, Audrain County Commission; and Jaye Jackson, St. Paul CME Church.

Participants are welcome to march to the celebration from the Mexico United Methodist Church, 122 E Promenade Street at 11:15 a.m. The public is welcome to attend.
