Ida Gastler, formerly of Wellsville, passed from this life on April 30, 2024, at Boone Hospital in Columbia. She was 86 years old.

A private service for children, grandchildren, and their spouses/significant others was held on Friday May 3, 2024, in Wellsville. Myers Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Ida Ursula "Sue" Hays Gastler was born May 20, 1937, in New Hartford, to Ollie C. Hays and Alma (Baughman) Hays. She graduated from Silex High School in 1955, and married Melvin Leon Gastler of Wellsville on November 5, 1955.

Ida, aka "Sue", helped on the family farm in rural Wellsville while raising her large family. She was known as an excellent cook and baker, canning many vegetables and fruits over the years, and being famous in the family for her homemade dinner rolls and cinnamon rolls. Ida was also skilled at sewing/mending and crocheting, creating beautiful things ranging from "Barbie" clothes to afghans.

After her children were grown, she worked in food service and housekeeping at a local nursing home for 15 years.

Ida enjoyed several trips in her lifetime, including to Germany and London; as a "groupie" to her son-in-law's marathons in the U.S.; to see her grandson graduate from army training in Fort Benning, Ga.; and to meet one of her favorite country singers, Mickey Gilley. Her favorite activities in retirement were watching TV and dining out with her family.

She resided at The King's Daughters Home in Mexico, for going on two years before relocating to Mexico.

Ida loved being a mother and "Grammy", and was also a fond aunt to many nieces and nephews. She was affectionately known for her "stylish" appearance, preferring dresses, jewelry, and coordinating purses and shoes when outside the home. Ida was a unique and treasured person who will be dearly missed.
