Mexico girls wrestling in state record books

It has been four years for Mexico girls wrestling, but it has garnered plenty of attention.

The Lady Bulldogs had some records in the Missouri State High School Activities Association books approved to add on to the program’s highest state finisher in Alexus Johns this season as a runner-up.

Katie Bowen is the program’s first ever state qualifier and medalist that didn’t earn a medal in her third trip this season but still is first in certain state categories. The future William Woods grappler has a career state-record 205 total team points in 37 duals and a season state-record 121 team points in duals wrestled during the 2021-22 season.

Bowen is also third all time for wins in a season with a 52-6 record during the 2021-22 season, ninth all-time with 250 total team points in a season for 2021-22, and 10th all-time in wins for a career with a record of 106-25.

Karisa Hayden has the fifth fastest pin in a match at nine seconds, which happened this past season. Hayden has won the 32nd-most matches in a season with a 33-19 record from this past year.

Johns’ first career state medal earned this season included her winning the seventh-most matches in a season with a 45-4 record. She also has the 29th-best mark with a 34-14 record during the 2022-23 season.

Abby Bowen -- Katie's sister -- has won the 17th-most matches in a season with a 41-14 record earned this past season.

Some of the Lady Bulldogs were also honored academically. Katie and Abby Bowen, Hayden and Abbie Seibert earned the National Wrestling Coaches Association High School Scholar All American Award, which goes to anyone with a 3.5 semester or accumulative GPA and a varsity letterman. The Bowen sisters were named academic all-state, which goes to anyone with a 3.5 semester or accumulative GPA and a state qualifier.
