As COVID cases decrease, hospital relaxes visitor restrictions

This week SSM Health St. Mary’s Hospital in Mexico began opening its doors, carefully, to visitors. The decision was made due to a decrease in community transmission of the COVID-19 virus and the policy went into effect on Monday.

The new visitor policy allows all non-COVID positive patients to have one support person at a time, over the age of 16, during designated hours.

Exceptions may be made for end-of-life situations.

The Holy Bible. Most people in the United States have heard of this most important book and many have at least one in their home. The question is, what makes this book so important; so special? What makes this book so vital to our lives?

One answer is that the Bible contains the words of God, the words of life. It is through reading, studying and obeying the teachings found in the Bible that we find eternal life in Jesus.

Vaccine speed

Being a senior citizen, I am greatly concerned about an issue related to the speed of inoculating citizens with Covid-19 vaccines. Missouri has not been in the forefront of speedy vaccinations. We need real speed.
Vaccinations will not be as fast as everyone says.

Letter to the Editor: First Responders

We all see them rushing to someone’s need.They are available to help when we need help the most.

I had my first experience with them on December 24th. These people I have seen going to someone else’s aid came to mine that day. A first responder arrived and was excellent. Two others also gave their time that day. The ambulance attendants came and they gave me expert treatment. They all helped me feel calmer and in good hands. Then at the Emergency Room I found some more people in our community who are invaluable to all of us.

Fifty to 60 customers used to stop by the Hedge Holler Harvest booth at the Mexico Farmers Market each week – which seemed like a good number at the time.

When the pandemic hit, however, business for the farm’s meats, eggs and vegetables boomed. Suddenly Hedge Holler had 500 customers on Saturday mornings alone.

“COVID hit and people quickly realized ‘I need to know where my food comes from,’” said Hedge Holler’s Matthew Van Schuyndle.

Family Video closing marks end of an era

Remember membership cards? Or the battle between Beta and VHS? Happy little reminders like “be kind, rewind”?

With the announcement that Family Video is shuttering its remaining stores across the U.S., including the one in Mexico, those memories from the golden era of movie rentals dimmed just a little more.

That Family Video survived for 42 years is often credited to the company’s strategy of locating many of its stores in smaller towns, where there weren’t movie rental options on every corner.

Alexis Burnett has been a part of Audrain County her entire life. She was born and raised in Mexico. She graduated from Mexico High School, she worked cleaning houses in the community and she donates to local charities.

Two teens sentenced in 2019 homicide

Two teens involved in the 2019 gunshot death of TaJuan Williams in Mexico have been sentenced to prison.

Demetric Dorsey, 17, received 10 years for one count of first degree involuntary manslaughter and 15 years for one count of armed criminal action. First Judicial Circuit judge Russell Steele determined that the two sentences will run concurrently.
