Bulldogs fall in extra innings

For Mexico it was another day, another extra inning ballgame.

On Tuesday at Green Field, the Bulldogs edged Hannibal with a game winner in the bottom of the eighth. Thursday night at Kirksville the eighth proved unkind, as the Tigers benefited from an error to win 7-6.

After the Bulldogs went down in order in the top of the inning, Kirksville’s Pearce Crawford opened the bottom half with a double. Reliever Will Dobyns struck out the next hitter and appeared to get the second out on a liner to right. But an error allowed the run home.

It had been a close contest throughout. Mexico took an early lead when a base hit by Andrew Runge drove in Ty Prince and Jesse Fennewald in the first. But Kirksville got a run in the second and three more in the third to take a 4-2 lead.

Tyler Thoenen doubled and scored in the fourth to narrow the gap. The Bulldogs regained the advantage in the fifth, when Daeye Miller and Landon Kleinsorge drew walks, chasing Crawford from the mound.

A Thoenen single sent Miller across the plate and a sacrifice fly to center by Quayvon Belcher scored Kleinsorge with the go ahead run.

The Tigers knotted it up again in their half of the inning. But a sixth inning home run by Prince swapped the lead again.

Despite a spectacular defensive play that saw Mexico catch two Tigers stealing, the hosts tied it up again in the seventh.

Prince started on the mound for the Bulldogs. Fennewald also took the hill.
