A brief exchange of gunfire on Monday, May 24, led to the hospitalization of a 30-year-old Mexico man, who investigators have identified as Trayvon D. Walls.

Walls, 30, sped away from the scene of the incident in the 1000 block of W. Breckenridge Street shortly after 6 p.m. and ended up crashing his vehicle in the 300 block of N. Missouri Street.

"That person was the only one injured," Mexico Public Safety Department (MPSD) major Brice Mesko reported.

In a Friday morning press release, the Mexico Public Safety Department added that Walls had been shot one time during the W. Breckenridge incident.

The incident began earlier in the day of May 24. Residents of the house had called police reporting that the suspect approached the property several times making threats. Officers arrived, but the man had left the area.

Attempts to locate him initially failed.

Around 6 p.m. he returned to the home and fired several shots. When a person inside returned fire, the suspect drove away.

He was able to walk away from the subsequent accident to a nearby house.

"That person drove him to another person's house," Mesko reported. "Eventually he got a ride to the hospital."

Walls was treated at Audrain Community Hospital and transferred by ambulance to the University of Missouri Hospital in Columbia.

The investigation made little initial headway and initial reports were that no one had been shot in the exchange.

An arrest warrant was issued by the Audrain County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office Thursday for Walls for unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of a controlled substance.

Friday, at approximately 9:30 a.m., after Walls was released from University Hospital, Columbia, the Audrain County Sheriff’s Office and MPSD arrested Walls at the home of an associate in the 8900 block of Missouri, Highway 15.

Officials indicated that the investigation continues and additional charges could be filed later. They added that charges could implicate additional people.
