Althiser ends North Callaway golf career with state trip to Class 2 meet

Davis Althiser wrapped up his senior year at North Callaway with something he hasn’t done in the sport of golf.

Althiser competed in a state golf meet for the first time in his career when he played Rivercut Golf Course in Springfield on Monday and Tuesday last week. He didn’t finish in the top 15 to medal as he was tied for 46th out of 78 golfers at the end of it but still added another accomplishment to his resume.

In his three years of golfing, Althiser has been all-conference the previous two years and medaled in various competitions this past season. Not only that, his serious regard for the sport has made him an effective leader in the three years Kalyn Bradshaw has coached him at North Callaway.

He has been a great leader in our program because he takes golf very seriously,” Bradshaw said. “Davis is very passionate about golf and he knows a lot of the mechanics. Most of my job was helping him with the mental side of the game. He has been enjoyable to coach.”

Althiser extended North Callaway’s streak of a state meet presence to four as the 2020 season isn’t included because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He said he always thought his game was good enough for the state level but had been missing that stronger mental component.

“I felt like I didn't play that well,” Althiser said. “I didn't play horrible but didn't play my best. It was a very fun experience and I was glad I got to play a new course with some of the best players.”

Bradshaw said Althiser is his biggest critic but is proud of him overall while dealing with heat and humidity on Day 1 and rain on Day 2, which didn’t seem to bother him as much. She said there were a few holes the first day that gave him some trouble as he finished the front nine with five double bogeys or worse, leading to a Day 1 score of 92.

On Day 2, Althiser shot a better 91 as he said just needed to not be overly focused on scores and “just play golf.” He said he would love another opportunity to play Rivercut.

“It was a very nice course,” Althiser said. “It rained a lot that week so some shots were harder than others. I didn't find the course too difficult and would be happy to play the course again.”

Bradshaw thinks Althiser would do better as he did at districts last year versus this year. Althiser finished outside of qualification last year at Norwoods Golf Course in Hannibal after shooting a 101, or 29-over par, and came back to the same course this year with a 91, or 91-over par. In his post-high school life, she wouldn’t be surprised to see Althiser become even better.

“Davis has put in a lot of time outside of golf season working on his game,” Bradshaw said. “His performance at districts last year really motivated him this year to make it to state. He also had more confidence in himself this season.”
