The Mexico Bulldogs defeated the Marshall Owls 28-20 in their first home game of the season.

The game was close throughout — running back Dante Billups ran in his third touchdown with 50 seconds remaining, sealing the win for Mexico.

Turnovers plagued the Bulldogs early, as two early fumbles helped the Owls build a 13-0 lead early in the second quarter.

“It always seemed like we were scrambling and we should have had control of that game, probably from that first kickoff,” Mexico head coach Steve Haag said.

The Bulldogs improved to 2-1 on the season. This Friday, they head back on the road to face Hannibal (3-0). Marshall dropped to 1-3 overall.

Later in the second quarter, a long run by Mexico quarterback Ty Prince set up Billups’ first score, then a Prince touchdown pass to Anthony Shivers tied the game at 13 heading into the half.

The turnover bug struck again early in the third, as a Prince pick-six gave Marshall a 20-13 lead.

Billups answered early in the fourth with a touchdown run, then sealed the game at the end of the quarter, giving the Bulldogs a win.

“That’s our ultimate goal, to put pressure on them and win games in the fourth quarter,” Haag said.

Billups finished the night with 95 yards and three rushing touchdowns on 22 carries.

“We weren’t doing anything fancy,” Haag said. “We were just running straight dive, forcing guys to come up and tackle him.”

Prince carried 16 times for 132 yards and completed six passes for 42 yards, a touchdown and an interception.

Shivers contributed on the ground and through the air, rushing six times for 58 yards and catching a 40-yard score.

The sophomore filled in for Isaiah Reams, who was injured last week against Orchard Farm with a bone bruise on his knee.

The team will evaluate Reams later this week. Haag is preparing for next week as if Reams won’t be available out of an abundance of caution.

“We got a long season, we’re going to need Isaiah down the road,” Haag said. “Although we want him to play, we want to be cautious so that it’s not an ongoing problem.”
