The Mexico boys wrestling program competed in the Sam Richardson Duals in Moberly last week, finishing 3-1.
The Bulldogs opened the day with a 51-27 win over Chillicothe, with Ricky Juarez, Watson Azdell, Ahrajah Givens, Grant Van Horn, Dylan Mosley, Keith Ransom, Jokiah Sewell, Deacon Haag and Emille Scanavino all picking up wins.
“It was a team effort,” said head coach Gayle Adams. “I thought every kid wrestled well and they’re wrestling to their potential.”
Scanavino, a sophomore, faced off against Chillicothe heavyweight Nicholas Swan for the third time, with the pair splitting previous matches. His win by fall in 2:48 gave him the 2-1 advantage on the season.
The Bulldogs followed with another dominant win, this time topping St. James 45-30.
Van Horn, Mosley, Ransom, Sewell, Peyton Hoover, Haag and Scanavino all tallied victories, with Juarez adding six points with a win by forfeit.
“It was kind of a funny dual,” Adams explained. “They had some opens and we didn’t match up very well with them, I didn’t think. But we got some good wins from some younger guys and just overall, the whole day I thought the kids wrestled well.”
The Bulldogs’ only loss on the day came in their third dual, falling 39-30 to Cameron.
Van Horn, Mosley, Ransom, Cameron Beasley, Sewell, Morgan Grubb all notched wins for Mexico, but the Bulldogs fell short, with Adams pointing to a few minor mistakes and conditioning as the main culprits.
With the Mexico football team playing deep into the postseason, some of the wrestlers who also played football got a late start on the wrestling season. Adams said he expects his team to learn from its mistakes and for conditioning to improve as the season continues, and, if the Bulldogs face Cameron again — he likes their odds.
“I think if we wrestled them again or if we wrestle them later on in January and it’s the same lineup, I think we come out on top,” he said.
The Bulldogs finished the day with a 44-30 win over Osage, with wins by Van Horn, Mosley, Ransom, Keegan Koons and Azdell, and Sewell, Haag and Juarez picking up forfeit victories.
Adams highlighted freshman Azdell’s 10-2 major decision win over Jacob Zelle.
“Watson Azdell had a really nice match in the last match of the dual,” said Adams. “The kid that he wrestled was a real crafty wrestler, but Watson had a nice game plan against him and wrestled really well.”
The Bulldogs have a brief break before returning to action with the Don Fuhrmann Duals in Hillsboro on Dec. 29.
“That kind of keeps the kids focused over Christmas Break,” Adams said. “It gives them something to look toward while they’re off. What else is nice is that we’ll see some bigger schools—Class 3 and 4—some teams that we’re not going to see in the postseason. It gives our kids some different looks and different styles.”
