Centralia girls win five matches in home tri meet

The Centralia girls were locked in tight bouts Thursday night at home but were in the right position most of the time.

The Lady Panthers, who ran out five out on the mat, lost 45-18 to Marshall after finishing with three pinfall victories and defeated South Callaway’s four wrestlers 21-12.

Centralia wrestling head coach Luke Grameke said there were a couple of his girls that showed gritty performances because they each endured through tight matches decided by one point.

Gretchen Marriott pinned Olivia Martin in the first period prior to being locked in a battle with South Callaway’s 170-pounder Lilli Lewis later in the night, ending in a 3-2 decision in favor of Marriott. Sophia Williams came back down 7-5 to tie her match with Marshall’s Emmi Boling, forcing overtime that ended in a 8-7 loss for Williams prior to a first-period pinfall victory over South Callaway’s Shelby Doster.

“The ones that stand out is Sophia Williams got a fall in the South Callaway dual and then Gretchen Marriott bumped up from 155 to 170 and gave up a little bit of weight and a little bit of strength and was able to gut out a win 3-2, getting a nearfall in that third period,” Grameke said. “Both of those girls stayed mentally tough and were coachable through those matches.”

The fact each of those girls were able to grind out wins, as was the case with Madie Shelton at 120 pounds and Besan Juma at 235 pounds, is encouraging to see, Grameke said.

Shelton wrestled Marshall’s Amaiya McClinton, pinning her near the boundary arc early in the second period before being pinned in the second period against South Callaway’s Dalayna Hargis, who qualified for state last year. Juma led Marshall’s Joanna Solano going into the third period prior to pinning her to the mat for the win.

“Up-and-down the lineup, what we’re trying to do in the wrestling room is flowing over into live competition. That’s all we can ask at this point in the season," Grameke said. “You have to be strong in those core positions and then we could branch out, whether it’s body type, skillset, or strength, and dictate where you can be most comfortable after that. But those core positions, everybody’s got to be foundationally strong.”
