Community R-6 girls out in full force in 59-36 victory against Van-Far

It wasn’t clear where the points would come from, and that is how the Community R-6 girls like it.

The Lady Trojans defeated Van-Far 59-36 on Tuesday night at home following a 45-43 loss Saturday to North Callaway in the Gary Filbert Classic. Unlike that game, the Lady Trojans (8-2) had 10 girls score points, hit five 3-pointers and finished 6-for-8 from the free-throw line.

Sarah Angel led with 16 point, four assists and four steals and had four follow her with six or seven points and three after that scoring five points. Kayla Jett had seven points, Olivia Kuda had six points, six rebounds, four steals and block, and Peyton Beamer and Jocelyn Curtis each had six points off the bench.

Community head coach Bob Curtis said he knew Van-Far (2-7) doesn’t have a big rotation so Community should use a big rotation Tuesday night to keep its players rested. Mara Jensen was also a chief concern as the Van-Far senior finished with 22 points, six rebounds, four steals and a block.

“We were trying to keep fresh bodies in there,” Curtis said. “Mara Jensen is a tough, tough inside presence so we were keeping fresh bodies on her all night. Offensively, we were a lot better. I think we missed 13 free throws on Saturday (against North Callaway). It was a really good game going into the break.”

Van-Far hung with the Lady Trojans early until a 14-0 run going into the second quarter built a 20-8 Community lead with around seven minutes left until halftime. The Lady Indians didn’t let the deficit grow any bigger than as their post players played big.

Along with Jensen, McKenna Engh-Hoffman finished with 12 points, eight rebounds and two steals. Van-Far head coach Heather Minter said there were a lot of positives that the Lady Indians just need to build off to achieve better results in the future, especially with their post duo’s performance.

“That’s something we’ve been working on, and tonight, it just finally clicked,” Minter said. “McKenna is one of those kids that’s going to play all-out for you. She’s capable of doing so much more for us. With her being able to score and Mara being able to score, it makes us so much better.”

Jensen and Engh-Hoffman were Van-Far’s only scorers up until Dalana Gay put back a miss with almost a minute left in the third quarter, but they combined for 19 points in the first half and had the Lady Indians trailing 29-19 at the intermission.

Community’s post player Kuda showed much “heart” after taking a charge in the first half. Curtis said. Kuda was at “about 75 percent” after hurting her ankle in Community’s Gary Filbert Classic game last Saturday against North Callaway.

Seeing her do that sparked the other Lady Trojans, and the results followed with Kuda notching an offensive putback and Alyssa Beamer banking in a 3-pointer right before the buzzer to make it 15-8 Community after the first quarter.

“Olivia took a charge in the first half,” Curtis said. “I thought that was a momentum shift. The banked 3 by Alyssa Beamer — instead of 12-8 it’s 15-8 at the end of the first quarter — that was really a crushing blow when that went down.”

Still, Van-Far was able to turn segments of the game into back-and-forth affairs, with Jensen and Engh-Hoffman working the paint. Community was able to push the lead going into the fourth quarter to almost 20 with two quick buckets near the end of the third quarter for a 48-29 advantage.

“They’re the better ball team no doubt,” Minter said. “We knew that coming in, but like we told our kids, we want them to just come in and compete and do the things we ask them to do to get better. I felt like we played with them for three quarters. We did a lot of good things tonight like McKenna played huge for us and Carmen (Wilburn) took care of the ball.”

As the game progressed, Curtis said he was concerned about keeping Wilburn and the rest of the Lady Indians quiet in the scoring column as he knew Jensen would get her points. With the lead growing, Community was able to try things offensively to give other girls some experience.

“We ran some different stuff offensively and got it up over 20 and then got everybody involved,” Curtis said. “It’s a good night going into Christmas.”

Community plays in the New Franklin Basketball Tournament at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 2 as the No. 1 seed. Van-Far faced Mexico (3-8) at 5 p.m. Dec. 30 in the Moberly Area Community College Shootout.
