Five area golfers headed to state

District golf cut lines can be cruel, as several area golfers found out this week. But five defied the challenges, advancing to their respective state tournaments.

Mexico’s Aiden Knipfel fired an 81 at the Warrenton Golf Course to tie for 12th in the Class 3 District 2 field. He will take on the Crown Pointe course in Farmington on Monday and Tuesday.

In the Class 2 District 2 event at Norwood Golf Club in Hannibal, Andrew Crum of North Callaway’s 88 put him sixth on the leaderboard. Oscar Lopez of Missouri Military Academy recorded a round of 95, a number that tied for 14th.

Both move on to Bolivar, where the Silo Ridge course awaits.

Noah Brooks of Centralia toured Richmond’s Shirkey Golf Course in 85 strokes to finish fifth in Class 2 District 4. He will be joined at Silo Ridge by teammate Lawrence Bennett, who carded a 95, good enough for 16th.

The fickle nature of the game was evident at Shirkey. Where Bennett’s score locked him in a tie for the final spots, Centralia’s Austin Mechlin was bumped by a single stroke.

Grant Qualls of Mexico shot an 89, which would have put him in good stead at other district tournaments. But in Class 3 District 2 he topped out in a tie for 23rd.

Andrew Hennen from Lutheran South claimed first in the class with a round of 69.

Further back on the board were Fulton’s Michael Holtkamp in 25th with a 90, Walker Gohring at 91 (t26), Lincoln Smith with a 100 (41), Josh Reams at 101 (t42) and Jack Winterbower, who filed a 106 to tie in 44th.

The rest of the Mexico contingent followed the Fulton group. Geoffrey Penn held 47th solo thanks to a round of 112. Landon Love tied for 52nd after carding a 120. And Jaden Hatfield shot a 135 to take 58th.

In the Class 2 District 2 tourney won by Bowling Green’s Brayden Buffington and his 77.

Behind Crum and Lopez were Davis Althiser of North Callaway in a tie for 31st after a round of 107. The Thunderbirds’ Chase Wright recorded a 107 to place him in 45th. And MMA’s Dhalil Belko came in 53rd, carding a 163.

Others from the schools were not classified.

In the large Class 1 District 3 field playing Moberly’s Heritage Hills, Haley Baskett of Van-Far settled into mid pack with a 101. The score gave her 43rd position in an event won by Logan Bain of Westran, who fired a 68.

Logan Cox from Hallsville captured the Class 2 District 4 title in 77 strokes. Mechlin just missed the cut. Beyond the cusp of state were the Panthers’ Max Enlow in 39th with a 110 and Jackson Bruce, who shot 121 for the 52nd spot.
