A late South Callaway rally Friday night resulted in a heart-breaking 54-53 loss for the North Callaway Thunderbirds as they vied for fifth place in the South Callaway Tournament.
Knotted 12-12 after the first quarter, the Thunderbirds entered the half with a 34-29 lead. South Callaway would outscore the Thunderbirds 25-19 in the second half and go on top for good with 11 seconds to go.
Sam Pezold led the Thunderbirds with 21 points, hitting five three-pointers and going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line; Pezold also added 3 assists. Trenton Jones had 11 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Matthew Weber had 10 points and 7 rebounds and fouled out early in the fourth quarter.
“The team played hard,” said coach Matt Miller of his team.
Early foul trouble impacted North Callaway’s rhythm and was compounded by Weber’s early exit.
The Thunderbirds enter this week’s play with a 7-5 record. They were slated to play Fayette Monday, Wellsville-Middletown Tuesday and will host Clopton Friday.
