Herbert F. Jackson, Jr., 83, of Mexico, passed away at 12:51 p.m. Friday Dec. 30, 2022 at Pin Oaks.

Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday Jan. 7, 2023, at Pickering Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be Saturday from 11 a.m. to service time at the funeral home.

Herbert (Herb) Franklin Jackson, Jr., was born on Nov. 17, 1939, to Beatrice and Herbert Jackson, Sr., the oldest of 14 children in Mexico, Mo.  He was a graduate of Mexico Senior High and remained a lifelong Bulldog fan.  Herb attended Lincoln University and was a military veteran. When he returned from military service, he began employment with the former AP Green Company and retired after 37 years.

Herb accepted Christ at an early age and was a life-long member of St. Paul C.M.E. Church.  He served on numerous boards at St. Paul, most recently on the Trustee Board.

Herb was married to Jessie M. (Barnes) Jackson for 60 years and she preceded him in death.  After retirement they enjoyed numerous trips for leisure, visiting family and friends.

Poppy as he was affectionately called by his grands, was an avid sports aficionado.  He was an avid golfer and spent many hours on the links until his health began to decline.  He enjoyed watching St. Louis Cardinals Baseball, NFL and NBA games and attending Mizzou football games regularly. He loved his home and yard and meticulously maintained it.

Herb was a lifelong resident of Mexico until he moved to Atlanta to reside due to his health.   While in Atlanta, Barry was the ultimate caretaker; unwavering in his care and support.  At the time of his passing, he had returned to Mexico and was residing at Pin Oaks Living Center.

He leaves to cherish his memory: one daughter, Debbie Cobbins (Minneapolis, Minn.); one son, Barry Jackson, (Atlanta, Ga.); five grandchildren: Andre Cobbins, (St. Louis), Breanne Cobbins, (Baltimore Md.),  Ashley Jones, (Chicago, Ill.),  Christopher Jackson and Parker Jackson (Portland Ore.), one great granddaughter, Alana Jessie Marie Adams; five brothers: Arthur Jackson (Mexico), Gary (Sarah) Jackson, (Columbia), Larry Jackson (Mexico), Lowell (Jaye) Jackson, (Mexico), and Ivan (Eula) Jackson Cordova, Tenn.; seven sisters, Elaine (Larry) Bell, (Mexico), Jaclyn (Richard) White, Mexico, Carol (Raymond) Williams, (Peoria, Ill.), Alice Jackson, (Mexico), Bobbette Jackson, (Mexico), Maria Jackson, (Columbia), and Rita Jackson, (Mexico); three brothers-in-law Stanley Barnes (Mexico), Theodore Barnes (Clark) and Gary Barnes (Columbia); two sisters-in-law Vickie Barnes Hargraves (Kansas City) and Vernitta Barnes (Seattle, Wash.) and numerous nieces and nephews.

 In addition to his parents and wife, Jessie, he was preceded in death by a sister, Tereatha Richardson; one daughter, Christine Jones; two sons, Harry Williams and Tracy A. Jackson; two brothers-in-law, Leroy Barnes and James Barnes; and two sisters-in-law, Ruthie Barnes and Darlene Davenport.

Memorials may be given to St. Paul CME Church, in care of Pickering Funeral Home, 403 N. Western, Mexico MO, 65265.
