As the Community R-6 and Cairo girls basketball teams entered the final quarter in a tight contest, the district championship hung in the balance.

It was the Lady Bearcats who wound up capturing the title, topping the Lady Trojans 44-37 in the final of the Class 2, District 5 Tournament held at Sturgeon High School.

Community R-6 ended the season with a 23-4 record. The top-seeded Lady Trojans opened the postseason with a 51-35 win over No. 4 Clopton in the semifinals Feb. 22.

Meanwhile, the Lady Bearcats (24-5) advance to the sectional round where they will face Scotland County (23-3) at 6 p.m. Wednesday at Hannibal High School. The winner will meet the winner of Salisbury and St. Paul Lutheran on Saturday, March 5, in the quarterfinals.

The fourth quarter proved to be the difference Friday night.

Community R-6 built a 12-6 lead in the opening quarter and led 20-17 at intermission. However, the Lady Bearcats fought back, clinging to a 27-26 lead at the end of the third quarter and then outscoring the Lady Trojans 17-11 in the final eight minutes.

Cairo head coach Brian Winkler credited his squad's defense.

Sarah Angel scored a game-high 17 points to lead Community R-6, but only five of those came in the second half. Alexis Welch also was held to nine points.

“We tried to do the best we could to guard Angel and Welch and I thought we did a really good job of that,” Winkler said. “I thought our defense was the reason we won this game.”

Cairo’s Macie Harman recorded a double-double with 13 points and 13 points. Gracie Brumley had 13 points, followed by Morgan Taylor and Jersey Bailey who had eight points apiece.
