Lady Trojans beat New Franklin, ranked ninth Class 2

A well-rounded offensive attack coupled with a stingy defense resulted in a 53-32 win for the Community R-VI Lady Trojans Friday night over New Franklin. Leading 14-12 after one quarter, the Lady Trojans scored 17 second-quarter points while holding New Franklin to eight, taking a 31-20 lead into the half.

Defense took over in the second half, as the ladies held New Franklin to 12 second-half points - four in the third quarter - for the win. With the victory, they improve to 14-1 overall and they are now ranked ninth in the state among Class 2 girls teams.

Four Lady Trojans scored in double figures, led by Sarah Angel, who finished with 17 points, 4 assists and 3 steals. Shelby Clark had 11 points, nine of which came from behind the three-point arc; Olivia Kuda had 11 points and Alexis Welch added 10.

“We have really started to come together offensively,” said Lady Trojans coach Bob Curtis.

New Franklin likes to take the air out of the ball on offense, looking for the high-percentage shot, so putting up 53 was an accomplishment.

“We had to be methodical, patient, and take quality shots and we did that,” Curtis said. “Sarah had a great game.”

He also credited Clark for her play.

“She shot the ball really well for us in a big CAC matchup,” he said.

The win was just the latest for the Lady Trojans, who had defeated Madison 62-8 earlier in the week.

Kuda led the way with 16 points and 6 rebounds; Welch had 12; Angel, 6; and Alyssa Beamer, 6.

Ten ladies scored.

“Olivia has really been playing well the last few games,” Curtis said, citing her scoring, defense, and energy and effort on loose balls.

“We continue to get better as the season progresses,” he said.

Next up is a homecoming matchup against Paris Friday night.
