Late heroics help Mexico down California

The Mexico baseball Bulldogs are 4-1 after going 2-3 in their recent season stretch. Friday, the Bulldogs fell 12-4 to Marshall.

Tied 4-4 in the top of the seventh inning, Marshall rallied late for the win. Jack Wilburn threw six innings for MHS, with Landyn Kleinsorge coming in for relief. Daeye Miller led the Bulldogs at the plate, going 2-for-4.

Saturday, the Bulldogs won a pair, walloping Eldon 16-4, fueled by a four-run third and eight-run seventh inning. During the eighth, Sam Ryan, Ty Sims, Miller, Kleinsorge and Tristan Playter drove in runs. Collectively, the Bulldogs had 16 hits.

Will Dobbins picked up the win, throwing five innings, allowing 4 runs on 4 hits. Ryan threw two innings in relief.

Andrew Runge (3-for-4) and Miller (3-for-5) each had three hits; Miller added three steals. Tyler Thoenen was 2-for-3 as was Brock Smythe.

Austin Maxwell would deliver the dramatic walk-off single in the bottom of the seventh against California Saturday. Maxwell’s late-game hit drove in two runs, handing the Bulldogs the 8-7 win. Maxwell threw four innings, allowing four runs on five hits while striking out two.

Brayden Dunn led the offense, going 2-for-3.

The Bulldogs were at Kirksville Tuesday (results not available at press time). They host Hannibal Thursday with a 5 p.m. game time.
