The Mexico Academic Team concluded a historic season with a third-place finish in the Missouri Class 5 Scholar Bowl tournament held in Columbia on Saturday, May 6.

It’s the first time in school history the academic team made it to the state tournament going up against Sullivan, Ladue, and Savannah for the championship.

Mexico’s academic team Head Coach Dale Schenewerk said in a press release his team started off rough in the first matchup versus Sullivan and trailed 250-100 at the halfway point but battled back with 210 points in the second half. The Bulldogs closed the gap but couldn’t quite catch Sullivan and fell 390-310. Sophomore Camden Williams led the Bulldogs with 80 points while senior captain Jamison Jeffries chipped in 10 points.

In the Bulldogs’ second matchup, the draw was a Top 25 nationally ranked and eventual state champion, Ladue. The Bulldogs had a much better first half versus Ladue but still trailed 220-160 at halftime. Ladue found their footing in the second half and cruised to a 450-280 win. Williams led the way with 40 points while Jamison, Liam Hoyle, and Dylan Reid each scored 10 points.

The Bulldogs came out strong in the third and final pool match versus Savannah. Mexico led 260-80 at halftime and turned things up in the second half to cruise to a 590-90 win. Williams took 18 of 22 toss-ups for 180 points. Declan Gleeson added 10 points.

Mexico got a rematch with Savannah for the third-place match and it went much like the first meeting with the Bulldogs winning 460-170 with Camden scoring 110 points including half of the toss-ups.

The Bulldogs are not done competing this year. Mexico will travel to Chicago June 10-11 to compete in the 2023 PACE National Scholastic Competition.
