Election day is upon us next week on Tuesday, November 8th and this past week the Mexico Alternative J.A.G. classes were analyzing our local election.
Students at the Mexico High School were encouraged to register to vote earlier in the school year, if they are of age by the Audrain County League of Women Voters.
JAG which stands for Jobs for America's Graduates has specific Personal Skills Competency goals they try to meet each year according to JAG Specialist Sarah L. Keithley. "Some of those pertain to civic awareness and participation so this was a perfect opportunity to help our students feel more confident at the polls this election", said Keithley.
Sample ballots were used in class to help students understand what issues are being proposed, what seats races are active for our State Senators and House of Representatives and how to make sure that their vote counts the way they want it to on November 8th. Keithly says " New voters of any age frequently have trouble understanding the process of voting as well as being able to read and analyze the language on the ballot.
Our goal is to create an opportunity for our young voters to have some prior access to the ballot so that they can know and feel comfortable with what they will see on election day.
