Mexico boys basketball is undefeated.

That was the case for the first 28 games last season until the Bulldogs were eliminated in the state quarterfinals by Class 4 state champion Vashon. This summer, Mexico sent a junior varsity/freshmen and varsity squads to Monroe City on Monday and Tuesday to play six games each in shootout rules, winning every game.

Head coach Darren Pappas said the wins and losses aren’t important in the summer as the Bulldogs mainly want to evaluate players for next season, but it was still a nice way to begin the team’s summer schedule.

“It was a good first outing for summertime,” Pappas said. “We don’t really dwell a whole lot on wins and losses in the summertime obviously because they don’t really count for anything. It’s a good indication to see where we’re at, what we need to work on, what kids need to work on individually and we really try to focus on the team chemistry aspect of it.

“We try to play kids up so that’s why a lot of the freshmen play against JV teams to try to push them and have some guys who were on JV last year that are trying to fill some roles for varsity due to our graduation. We really use this time period as an evaluation piece for individuals and for the team aspect as well.”

On Monday, Mexico’s varsity defeated Camp Point Central, Elsberry and Griggsville Perry and Mexico’s JV team won against Montgomery County, Unity and Glasgow. On Tuesday, Mexico’s varsity was victorious against Monroe City, Milan and Western and Mexico’s JV defeated Monroe City, Camp Point Central and Scotland County.
The shootout rules included two 16-minute running halves and a free throw counts for two points.

Pappas said Mexico has seven shootout days remaining this summer, starting with the JV/freshmen going to one in Higbee on Tuesday and Wednesday and the varsity squad playing in the Paradise Shootout in Stover on Thursday and Friday. The varsity also plays in Harrisburg May 21 and in the Rib City Shootout on May 23-24 in Dexter.
