The Mexico boys came out of its first action out of the holiday break on the winning side.
The Bulldogs didn’t win the Don Fuhrmann Duals in Hillsboro on Thursday but were 3-2 in the five duals they competed in to finish fourth out of 10 schools and had two close the event undefeated. Hillsboro took first place in its home tournament, and Kirkwood finished second.
Mexico defeated Pacific 42-23, lost 57-21 to Kirkwood, won 60-9 against St. Charles West, defeated St. Francis Borgia 54-24, and finally dropped the third-place dual against Washington 57-24. Kayle Martin didn’t lose at 138 pounds while pinning three opponents, and Grant Van Horn remained undefeated on the day while winning via pinfall twice.
Peyton Hoover was among the Bulldogs to lose only one match, finishing with a 4-1 record, and pinned three opponents in 165-pound competition. At 126 pounds and 190 pounds, respectively, Watson Azdell and Grant Walker each finished with 4-1 records and two pinfall victories.
Kayle Martin won all of his matches against Pacific’s Tate Martin, St, Charles West’s Anthony Guccione and Washington’s Tristen Koehmstedt via pinfall. Van Horn defeated Pacific’s Dylan Stout by an 8-3 decision, Kirkwood’s Maximus Kostos by a 12-5 decision, St. Charles West’s Zeric Maxwell by technical fall, pinned Borgia’s Kamper Brinkmann in 20 seconds, and won by pinfall against Washington’s Alec Pecka in 38 seconds.
Hoover lost to Kirkwood’s Alex Osorio past the three-minute mark prior to winning his next match via technical foul and then his succeeding two by quick pinfalls. Azdell was undefeated until losing to Washington’s Devon Deckelman by a 6-0 decision. Walker was undefeated prior to being pinned by Washington’s Tanner Schwoeppe, owning a 10-7 decision victory against Pacific’s Israel Guenzler and a 4-1 decision win against St. Charles West’s Gage Lesire.
