League of Women Voters Candidate Forum set for March 30, 2023

The Mexico- Audrain County League of Women Voters will host a Candidate Forum for City Council and School Board Candidates Thursday, March 30 at the Mexico YMCA beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Forum will be held in the pickleball court area.

The League of Women Voters of Mexico-Audrain County is a nonpartisan political organization and cannot endorse or oppose any candidate for office. However, a basic purpose of the League is to promote informed voting. The League makes every effort to assist candidates in presenting their opinion(s) to the voters.

Each candidate was contacted by the League and asked two questions pertaining to the election. Their responses to these questions as well as their answers to questions submitted by the audience attending the Forum will make up the program. The Forum is open to the public and all are encouraged to attend.

Candidates were asked two questions, with a 200-word answer limit for each.

Question 1:  What are your qualifications for a position on the Mexico City Council?

Question 2: Identify two issues you would like to see addressed by the Mexico City Council during the upcoming term. How would you recommend these issues be addressed?

  1. Since the early age of 15, I began my career as a fire explorer. This allowed be to have contact with the public and provide a service. I continued forward to work for the City of Beverly Hills Fire Department, California. After completing the fire academy, I was employed with the Department of Defense as a firefighter. I was later promoted to Fire Inspector. In this capacity, I conduct public speaking engagements and educational programs to the public. I moved to Missouri in 1999. I continued in the fire service and continued my education into the field of law enforcement. to improve the community in which I lived I decided to run for city council and was elected. I assumed the position of Major for the Village of Tuscumbia. I'm familiar with forms of government and worked for the State of Missouri in the Fire Safety Division. I later retired due to a medical condition. As a result of my public service, I learned to listen and make decisions based on facts and the needs of the community.
  1. The first area of concern is the road conditions in the city. I find the conditions to be in some areas very poor. I would assist in seeking the possibilities of addressing this issue by the city council and providing my input and contacts with the Missouri Department of Transportation. To request assistance in fixing the roadways and intersections if possible. To include possible grant programs for assistance. The second issue is assisting the development of our recruitment and retention of our Public Safety Officers. I continually see advertisements seeking replacement of officers, due to shortage. I would like to ensure our community is protected and enforcement continues for the citizens of Mexico.
