Mexico garbage rates to go up April 1

The Mexico City Council gave final approval on an increase in residential sanitation services beginning on April 1. As a result of the decision, the base monthly rate will go from $12.13 to $12.47.

Mexico’s 10-year contract with Dayne’s Waste Disposal calls for annual pricing adjustments. Last fall Dayne’s requested an increase based upon rising costs on their end.

Deputy city manager Roger Haynes and city staff took into consideration residential unity pricing with the services contract, along with operating expenses related to sanitation services funded through user fees in coming up with the amount.

Haynes anticipates city sanitation expenses from April 1, 2021 to April 1, 2022 to reach $636,227. The largest chunk of this is the collection contract, at $444,777 not including fuel adjustments.

“A fuel cost adjustment is part of the monthly cost,” he said.

Household hazardous waste removal adds another $21,993 to the total. Earned interest saves $10,000.

Haynes explained that the monthly fee was calculated using the estimated annual operating cost from residential and hazardous waste removal of $648,020 divided by the 4,330 current residential accounts in the city.

The council had visited the matter last fall after Dayne’s issued the request.

At that point they examined Dayne’s expenses. During the council’s regular meeting on March 8, they went over the city’s costs.

“There’s nothing new we haven’t discussed,” council member Vicki Briggs noted.

Council member Chris Miller was absent. Otherwise the council voted unanimously in favor of the increase, which goes into effect on April 1.
