The Trojan Duels in Carrollton is a frenetic event – five teams pitted against each other in rotation, and it is a strong field.
Mexico emerged from the fray 3-2 as a team, dropping a tight 41-36 match to the hosts and struggling against Chillicothe but taking the upper hand over Hallsville, Penney and North Kansas City.
Things started well for the Bulldogs against the Trojans. Gavyn Martin captured the 126 match by fall at 1:40. After two wins by forfeit and losses at 145 and 152, Terrell Williams took the 160 contest by fall at 5:59 and Jokiah Sewell followed at 182, dropping Carrollton’s Noah Frank at the 5:40 mark. But it was all Carrollton from there.
Despite being on the downside of a 54-27 outcome against Chillicothe, the Bulldogs had several highlights. Ricardo Juarez earned a 6-4 decision in the 120 class to start things off. Martin won again at 126 by fall. When the 132 and 138 turns came, Keith Ransom and Dylan Mosley came out on top. Mexico’s final individual win in the round was at 170, with Sewell earning a fall.
In the Bulldogs’ 45-36 win over Hallsville, Ransom edged Gavynn Carpenter by 3-2 decision. Williams won by fall in the 160 class, while Sewell did the same at 170.
There were several forfeits and Juarez capped things off in the 120 class, claiming a fall at 3:00.
Mexico dropped just three matches against Penney. Keegan Koons got into action at 106, taking victory by fall. Juarez took the 120 match and Martin continued his winning ways at 126. Ransom and Mosley took their matches, both by fall. Sewell captured the 170 contest at 2:00.
There were more forfeits than wrestling when it came Mexico’s turn against North Kansas City. But Cameron Beasley put in a solid effort against NKC’s Owen Holmes to win by fall at 1:23 in the 152 weight class. Williams and Sewell each won, sealing a successful day on the mat.
