Mexico is top dog: Bulldogs prove too much for Brookfield Bulldogs

Not much got by Mexico’s front line of Addison McCoy, Jessica Stephens and Mya Miller on Tuesday night. And with Ally Wilson in control from the service line, the Bulldogs easily dispatched Brookfield in three, winning sets of 25-7, 25-11 and 25-13.

“Us playing as a team worked out,” Miller observed. “Once we’re on a roll, it’s like we continue to dominate.”

With everything clicking through the first two sets, coach Eric Wulf sent Wilson to the line to open the third. Mexico scored after a brief volley when Miller laced a diagonal shot into the corner. Wilson aced the next serve and the Bulldogs advanced to 3-0 on Stephens’ vicious slam. From there, a combination of aces, strong net play and volley killing hits by Mexico’s front three created a comfortable 9-0 cushion.

At that point, Stephens said, “we pretty much knew it,” adding “we came out strong and played strong.”

Wilson was the catalyst for much of the Bulldogs’ success. Not only did she record seven aces on the night with precise service, she also provided scoring opportunities through deft set work. Wilson was credited with 20 assists.

“She’s only a sophomore, but she’s got a lot of experience,” Wulf noted.

The Bulldogs were able to maneuver the ball to strikers and baffle Brookfield’s defense thanks to a fluid attack based on ball control.

“We had a lot of really good passes, which helped on sets,” Wilson explained.

Brookfield – also nicknamed the Bulldogs – staged a brief rally, putting up three consecutive points. But with Stephens on the line, Mexico’s Bulldogs reeled off another five, stretching the score to 14-3.

The visitors stiffened momentarily, winning three long volleys. But with Mexico on the verge at 24-13, Wilson beat Brookfield’s Lani Arnold with a loping serve. All the visiting middle hitter could do was glance it into the net.

“We had a lot of long rallies we could have put away earlier,” Wulf said, looking toward improvement with games at Marshall and back home against Hannibal looming.

The win moves Mexico to 7-10, coming off losses to Southern Boone and Warrenton. The Bulldogs played Marshall on Thursday, after The Ledger’s deadline. They host Hannibal on Monday evening.
