Bulldogs’ massive first half leads to 70-44 win at Bowling Green
The Mexico boys turned Thursday’s contest in Bowling Green into a one-half game.
The Bulldogs defeated the Bobcats 70-44 after leading 48-12 at halftime. Mexico was outscored 32-22 in the second half, but its commanding lead still gave them the decisive victory.
Mexico (9-3) shot 54.5 percent from the field, including 62 percent on two-point attempts, while dishing out 20 assists. The Bulldogs outscored Bowling Green (4-6) in transition at 23-6 and in the paint at 40-24.
Jordan Shelton finished with a game-high 28 points and had three assists, DJ Long followed with 10 points and a team-high five assists, Anthony Shivers had 10 points and four assists, and Kaden Benne had seven points, hitting one 3-pointer.
Mexico defeated Class 6 Francis Howell North (4-5) 66-48 in the first round of the Lindbergh Invitational Boys Tournament on Monday and played Class 5 Westminster Christian Academy (8-5) on Tuesday night.
Lady Bulldogs outpaced by Bowling Green perimeter shooting, lose 52-32
The Mexico girls didn’t have the shooting to compete with Bowling Green on Thursday night.
The Lady Bulldogs lost 52-32, falling behind 17-4 after the first quarter and being outscored 35-28 in the final three quarters. Bowling Green (6-7) went 9-for-18 from 3-point territory while Mexico (5-9) was 1-for-13 on those shots.
“Early defensively, we were playing solid,” head coach Ed Costley said. “Our struggles were finding a flow offensively and taking our shot in the flow. Misses we had led to transition opportunities for Bowling Green.”
Claire Hudson led Mexico with six points, and Kenzie Taylor and Addison Heim followed with five points each.
Mexico hosts Hallsville (9-2) tonight at 7:30 p.m.
