Mexico Senior Center to reopen inside dining

Attention Mexico Senior Center diners: Inside dining will return Monday, May 3.

The center has continued to serve the senior community with drive-through pick-up while under the shadow of COVID-19, but volunteers and staff members look forward to taking the next step back to normal.

“We have missed everyone,” said Ione Bickell, senior center administrator. “We hope everyone comes back.”

All activities will be open to participants, and as Bickell says, “We have lots of activities planned.” To name a few, there will be cards, pool (billiards) and pool tournaments, bingo, music, parties, health education and guest speakers.

Prior to COVID, the center was serving anywhere from 75 to 100 seniors daily. It is hoped that numbers will begin to return to that, and Bickell feels the benefits on inside services are many.

“It means that we all get to see friends and socialize,” she said. “It also means seniors getting proper nutrition — and just plain having fun.”

Indoor dining was suspended in March 2020 as COVID-19 took hold of Audrain County and the world. But the center moved quickly to ensure services weren’t interrupted, introducing drive-through dining about a week after congregate dining stopped, serving about 100 seniors weekly.

“Each senior receives seven meals to cover the whole week,” said Bickell.

And there are plenty of delicious meals on the menu. Among the most popular offerings are breakfast, ham and beans, barbecues, spaghetti and meatballs and fried chicken.

Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. Masks will be required. To keep up with what’s going on at the senior center, keep reading The Mexico Ledger, check them out on Facebook and radio and subscribe to the senior newsletter.

The Mexico Senior Center is located at 606 East Park Street.
