Mexico sets filing dates for council seats

With two Mexico City Council terms set to expire in April, the board moved to set dates for candidates to file for the seats at their regular meeting on Monday.

The municipal election is set for April 6, 2021.

Council members Chris Miller and Vicki Briggs wrap up their terms in April of next year. At the recommendation of City Manager Bruce Slagle, the council voted to establish a filing period from Dec. 15 of this year through Jan. 19, 2021. During this time, those wishing to be placed on the ballot for council positions can submit statements of candidacy to the City Clerk’s office.

City council terms are for three years.

Briggs made news in June when she was selected as Mayor Pro Tem. At the same meeting, Mayor Ayanna Shivers was chosen for a second term as mayor. It marked the first time that women were named to the top leadership positions in the city.

Miller is a veteran public servant who served two terms as mayor.

The next term set to expire is that of Chris Williams in April of 2022. Shivers and Steve Haag hold office until 2023.

In June, Haag replaced Steve Nichols, a five-term city council member.
