Junior Ramirez pulled what might be called a double triple – three wins, three pins – as Mexico’s middle school wrestlers took part in a quad meet with Centralia, Hallsville and Moberly just before the Thanksgiving break.
Individually, the Bulldogs split on the evening, winning 18 matches and dropping 18. But coach Tony Senor expected a battle.
“When Centralia, Moberly, and Hallsville come to town, we know that they will be ready to wrestle,” he said. “We had some close matches tonight.”
Grant Van Horn captured both of his matches, one by pin. Darren Williams did the same. Peyton Hoover, Noah McCune and Isai Hernandez went 2-1, with Hoover recording a pin.
Watson Azdell – also 2-1 – took both wins by pin. Alizabeth Welch was 1-2, but on her win she stuck her opponent to the mat.
Other Mexico wrestlers notching wins were Evan Wilson and Marcos Matuz. But Senor saw a lot in the tight matches that didn’t go the Bulldogs’ way.
“Quaid Grubb lost a close match but he is showing a lot of improvement and heart,” the coach pointed out.
Christian Pilger, Tyson Carr, Jacob Stevens and Michael Pfeifer also hit the mat.
Mexico will wrestle again tonight at the Sports Complex, facing Hannibal, Troy and Troy-South.
