Missouri Military Academy tennis concludes season with several record breakers

Missouri Military Academy’s season was cut short in the state playoffs but with plenty accomplished.

MMA won its third straight district title before being eliminated by Notre Dame (Cape Girardeau), who has also won three straight district titles, on May 15. In the individual Class 2 state tournaments on Thursday, May 18 at Cooper Tennis Complex in Springfield, Gorka Yarte lost two matches in singles while Patricio Bravo Knobloch and Samuel Way dropped a pair of matches in doubles as Way and Yarte each broke the school career wins record along with Nathan Dempsey.

Way currently holds the record with a career record of 64-27 that was previously established at 48 wins in 1992. Dempsey is close behind with a 63-22 record, and Yarte concluded his Colonel career with a 55-28 record.

“Senior Gorka Yarte and juniors Way and Dempsey have set a great culture of winning on our team and that leadership carried over to all the new cadets on the team this year,” head coach Brad Smith said. “We played hard and saw how great class 2 tennis is in Missouri. We look forward to making it back to state in the future.”

Yarte played to a 24-11 record this season as he lost to Westminster Christian’s Calvin Van Heest 6-3, 6-4, unable to keep up with “consistent hitting” from his opponent, Smith said. After a second-round forfeit, Yarte played in the quarterfinals consolation round against Platte County No. 1 Gavin Nichols and lost 6-3, 6-2, with almost every game going into deuce.

The sophomore Bravo Knobloch and Way finished with respective 19-14 and 23-11 records this season as they lost 6-0, 6-0 to the state champion pair of Nathan Chan and Amit Kadan from Ladue Horton Watkins. The MMA duo lost a contested two and half four match 5-7, 7-5, 8-10 to Platte County’s Jaron Cook and Jack Bralley.

Other cadets season records include junior Francisco De La Maza at 22-6, Dempsey at 23-4, senior Ernesto De La Maza at 22-6 and senior Temuulen Manlai at 5-5 with a 6-8 career record.
