Kerns dominates in 1-2 night for Missouri Military Academy wrestling
Deonte Kerns was dominant on Wednesday night for Missouri Military Academy, but other Colonels stood out.
Kerns won all three of his matches with pins in the first period, and MMA head coach Levi Iman said he liked how his kids performed against new competition in the Summit Christian Academy quad in Lee’s Summit, finishing 1-2 with a 54-12 win against East (Kansas City), a 32-30 loss to Lafayette (St. Joseph) and a 42-33 loss to Summit Christian Academy.
“I am very happy with how the team performed,” Iman said. “These are teams we had never faced and did not know what to expect from them. The cadets all stepped up to the challenge and did a great job.”
The Colonels collected 13 varsity pinfalls and seven for junior varsity. Iman said team captain Adam Swenson stood out after losing his first match and responded with a pinfall win and 8-6 decision victory. Blake Krull stood out as well by going 2-1 coming off an injury.
Russell Olson finished 3-0, and Sam Stevens, Michael Pfeifer, Ryan Miles and Trae Griffiths were the cadets that each went 2-1. For JV, Jayce Maeser went 3-0 and David Trevino was 2-0.
MMA drops home opener 52-34 to Calvary Lutheran

Nevertheless, the Colonels lost 52-34 to Calvary Lutheran (3-2) after being outscored 17-5 in the third quarter. MMA (1-3) trailed 24-20 at halftime.

MMA hosted Liberty Christian Academy on Thursday prior to a rematch with Silex (1-3) at 7:30 p.m. Monday at home. The Colonels won 49-47 in Silex to open this season.
