MMA tennnis fall in quarterfinals

Most people have heard the one about an irresistible force colliding with an immovable object. But what happens when two unstoppable forces meet head on?

One of the two must give way. And on Wednesday, it was Missouri Military Academy that caved.

The Colonels first loss of the season came in the state quarterfinals at Clayton by a 5-0 score that doesn’t represent the tight battles on the court.

“We didn’t hand them matches, they were good enough to take them from us,” said head coach Brad Smith.

Isaac and Simon Way took three games, but conceded eight. It was the same for Marco Tavarez, who teamed with Oscar Lopez, and the duo of Samuel Way and Gorka Yarte. All earned wins and kept games close but fell 8-3.

In singles, Simon Way was hampered by a knee injury and could not keep up the pace. Lopez lost 6-3, 6-0.

The first to five format cut short the matches of Isaac Way, Tavarez and Samual Way.

MMA finished 12-1 on the year.

“We had a great season and have a strong young core returning next year,” Smith said. “MMA tennis has a bright future ahead.”
