NC ROUNDUP: Thunderbirds surpass 80 points in dominant win at New Bloomfield

Posted

The points were coming from everywhere Friday night for the North Callaway boys in New Bloomfield.

The Thunderbirds defeated the Wildcats 83-36, scoring their most points in a game since an 84-70 victory Jan. 16, 2021, against South Callaway. A couple scored a new career-high and three freshmen picked up their first varsity points.

Head coach Matt Miller said he was most proud of those young players who were able to not only play but score as it was a great team effort against New Bloomfield (0-13)

Matthew Weber led the way with 17 points, Sam Pezold followed with 15 points all in the first half, eight steals, five assists and four rebounds, Brendan Reinhard finished with a career-high 10 points he scored in the first half, and Aidan Martin had five assists and a career-high six points.

North Callaway (6-5) dropped 29 points in the first quarter and then 32 in the second quarter, reaching 50 points with about five minutes left until halftime.

The Thunderbirds played Calvary Lutheran (6-2) in the first round of the South Callaway Boys Varsity Tournament on Tuesday.

Ladybirds overcome sickness to win 42-35 at New Bloomfield

The North Callaway girls had two opponents Friday night: New Bloomfield and the flu.

The Ladybirds won 42-35 on the road while several of their players were dealing with sickness. Their two leading scorers Natalie Shryock and Riley Blevins were included as they combined for 12 points.

Abrielle Burgher picked up the scoring slack by finishing with 17 points, three 3-pointers and three steals. Shryock led the team with four steals while consistently taking time on the bench along with Blevins.

Head coach Tim Turlington said it can’t be overlooked how hard it is to win on Friday night with the weekend and time off just on the horizon. The sickness complicated things more so he’s glad the Ladybirds (8-5) came away with a win.

North Callaway held a lead as big as 10 points but couldn’t widen it anymore due to New Bloomfield (2-9) making plays. Ashlyn Peters led New Bloomfield with 10 points and two 3-pointers, scoring seven of her points in the second half.

New Bloomfield head coach Brett Craighead said Friday’s game was the best game his team has played thus far so the Ladybirds had to work a bit after leading 25-17 at halftime. The Lady Wildcats output was just about even with the Ladybirds in the second half.

North Callaway (8-6) lost 53-45 to Linn (8-4) on Monday in the first round of the South Callaway Girls Varsity Tournament. The Ladybirds face South Callaway (0-9) at 6 p.m. tonight in the middle school.
