Community head coach Bob Curtis did not quite know what to expect from his Trojans as the girls basketball schedule tipped off Tuesday night at Marion County.
Six key players from last season’s final four squad graduated, the team went into quarantine for two weeks, cutting into practice time. And to make matters more uncertain, all-everything – conference and district – performer Alexis Welch was unavailable.
He had no need to worry. The Trojans jumped out to a 21-11 advantage in the first and held on for a 47-40 victory.
Brenna Beamer and Emma Hombs were catalysts. Beamer came off the bench in the first and hit two quick three pointers to spark the offense. And Hombs was a force on both ends of the court.
“Emma Hombs was everywhere, ripping down boards, guarding their best post and giving us a post presence offensively,” Curtis said.
Sarah Angel led the way, as well, scoring 10 points. Beamer, Emma Angel and Emmi Johnson added 7 each. Brynna Beamer put in a strong 6 and Shelby Clark notched 4 to go along with a pair of steals.
Hombs had 8 boards.
Despite the solid effort, Curtis could see the effect of two weeks of virtual practice.
“We will work on our conditioning,” he observed. “The fourth quarter we looked a bit drained.”
