The county plans to update its voting equipment, adding electronic poll pads to make the check in process at polls more efficient.
Audrain County Commissioners voted unanimously to accept a bid of $24,639 from Adkins Election Services for Tenex pads. Although it was the higher of the two bids received, the county uses electronic voting equipment from Unisyn. County Clerk Lisa Smith explained that Tenex and Unisyn have an exclusive agreement to print barcodes for Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant voting machines.
A bid by Knowink for $20,895 would have required the county to purchase new ADA machines.
Poll pads allow election workers to check in voters electronically. The pads identify registered voters instantly, relegating paper lists to a back up role. They eliminate the process of grouping voters by name and precinct, to be checked off by workers.
The bids were received on Sept. 9. The commissioners delayed a vote on the poll pads until December to allow Smith time to research the compatibility of the two companies with Unisyn voting machines.
