The Community R-6 School District has found its new leader.
Nick Larson, currently the Montgomery County High School principal, will take over superintendent duties. He’ll replace Cheryl Mack, who plans to retire after the school year. Larson will officially begin his new duties July 1.
“I’m excited for my opportunity,” he said. “But I’m going to miss my staff and the people here within the Montgomery County School District. They’ve been great to me through the entirety of my time here. I’ll miss some of the people, but I’m excited about my new role.”
Larson is also excited that he will join his wife, Haley, at the R-6 school district. Haley teaches language arts at the high school.
“That will be awesome,” Larson said.
Larson, a Liberty, Mo., native, was hired to replace Chris Redmon as MCHS principal in 2019.
“Nick has been here for a couple of years and he has done a nice job for us,” R-II Superintendent Dr. Tracy Bottoms said. “He laid some groundwork just like Chris Redmon did prior to that.”
Larson worked as an assistant principal and athletic director at Centralia High School for two years before heading to MCHS.
“The Montgomery County School District and the community were absolutely awesome to me and my wife,” Larson said. “I loved working here. (Former R-II superintendent) Mr. (Mike) Gray hired me a couple of years ago and my intention was to stay here for about five years while I finish my doctorate and get through some other things.”
But Larson’s plans were changed when the R-6 superintendent job opened in October.
“I got married in October and the job got posted while my wife and I were on our honeymoon,” Larson said. “So we started talking about it at that point about whether it would be a good fit and it would be good for our family. Then, we decided that was somewhere we wanted to be for a long period of time.”
Larson, who lives in Montgomery City, said since he was hired as R-6 superintendent, he’s been staying in touch with Mack, who has been with the R-6 school district for 10 years.
“She has been a tremendous resource and a lot of help to me as I get prepared for the transition,” Larson said. “She has done a great job with the Community R-6 School District. I know I have big shoes to fill, but I look forward to being able to reach out to her in the future to figure out how things went in the past and where we will be heading in the future.”
Larson graduated from Liberty High School in 2007. He earned his Bachelor’s degree at William Jewell College and Master’s degree at William Woods University. Larson worked at the Tina-Avalon School District in Carroll County, Mo., and at Sturgeon Elementary in Sturgeon, Mo.
