North Callaway boys, girls exit districts in semifinals

In the third meeting of the season between the North Callaway and Montgomery boys basketball teams, it was the Wildcats who escaped district play with the victory.

The second-seeded Thunderbirds let a fourth-quarter lead slip away in a 45-37 loss in the Class 3, District 7 semifinals on Friday night.

North Callaway ended the season with a 14-11 record.

Montgomery County advanced to Saturday's title game where it upset top seed Hermann 52-44.

The Thunderbirds trailed 26-21 at halftime, but used an 11-5 run in the third quarter to take a one-point lead heading into the final quarter.

“The players played their butts off,” North Callaway coach Matt Miller said. “We fell behind by 11 points in the first half, but fought back and actually had a one-point lead in the third quarter. But give Montgomery County credit, in the fourth quarter, they made their shots and we didn’t.”

North Callaway made only 14 of 46 shots from the field, a 30 percent clip.

“It wasn’t because of turnovers,” Miller said. “We only had seven in the game. Our players played hard this entire season. We will miss our two seniors next year.”

Junior Matthew Weber led the Thunderbirds with 16 points, including three treys. The next highest scorer was sophomore Sam Pezold with five points, who also had six steals. Junior Brayden O’Neal had three assists in the loss.

Keenan James led Montgomery County with 13 points, while Ethan Rakers added 12.

The conference foes split two previous meetings during the regular season. North Callaway won the first contest 55-44 back on Dec. 30 and lost 62-47 on Jan. 11 in the South Callaway Tournament.
