The North Callaway girls were held to three second-half points in a 33-23 loss to Elsberry Thursday night. It was a game that hinted at the two teams’ previous matchup in the Bowling Green Tournament as Callaway again relinquished a first-half lead with a cold second half.

Leading 20-11 entering the half, Callaway was outscored 22-3 in the final two periods.

While the offense was cold, the Thunderbird defense proved stingy. But the offensive woes were significant including only three assists for the game and 0-for-15 shooting from the field in the second half.

Abrielle Burgher and Ryelle Schmauch had 6 points each to lead North Callaway. Burgher added 4 steals. Kyanne Kellerman had 5 points and 10 rebounds.

Candice Dowell and Kylie Kinsler led Elsberry with 9 points each.

Callaway falls to 5-14 overall and 2-4 in Eastern Missouri (EMO) Conference play with the loss. Elsberry improves to 13-7 overall and 4-2 in the EMO.

Callaway unleashes the offense in big win

The third quarter has been a challenge at times for the North Callaway Thunderbirds and has oftentimes been the team’s lowest scoring period in 2020-21 games.

That wasn’t the case Monday night against Calvary Lutheran, as the T-Birds exploded for 26 third-quarter points on their way to a 61-36 rout of their hosts.

The game was tied 11-11 at the end of the first quarter, but the Callaway defense locked down in the second quarter, holding Calvary Lutheran to only three points. The T-Birds would pour it on in the second half, highlighted by third quarter and complemented by a 14-11 fourth.

“The team played excellent basketball on both sides of the court,” said Callaway coach, Morgan Beamer.

Abrielle Burgher led the T-Birds with 18 points; Makenna Allen had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds, Allen also added 4 steals. Jalyn Leible had 10 points and 4 steals and Haley Kimbley, 8 points, 5 assists.

Sydney Morris had 10 points for Calvary Lutheran.
