Drew Rohrabach won the pole vault competition, Joshua Shelby hurled the javelin farther than the rest of the field and the girls 4x200 squad blazed their way to the top of the podium, making it a good day for the Thunderbirds at Tuesday’s Guy Rush Memorial Meet in California.
The team of Corynne Miller, Taylor Head, Kyanne Kellerman and Makenna Allen took the 200 relay with ease. Their time of 1:53.74 was a full three seconds ahead of Capital City’s quartet.
Miller, Head and Kellerman were part of the 4x100 side with Mackenzie Eaker that took second to Capital City. And Head and Miller battled in the individual sprints, as well. They finished second and fifth, respectively, in the 100 meter dash and Head took second in the 200 behind Gracie Schulz of Belle, with Miller crossing in third.
Lydia Backer claimed third in the 400, a second ahead of New Bloomfield’s Ella Trigg in the race for the podium.
In the distance runs, Pressley Smauch brought home silver in both the 1,600 and the 3,200. And the 4x800 team of Smauch, Kaleigh Moore, Piper Jeffries and Rachael Jeffries came in third.
Rylle Smauch took third in the pole vault.
Allen grabbed top fives in the hurdle events. Also with top five finishes were Alana Todd in high jump, Jalyn Leible in long and triple jump and Ellie Bedsworth for the javelin.
The North Callaway boys also collected a slew of top performances, led by the golds of Rohrbach and Shelby.
Rorhbach launched himself above the pole vault bar at 10’50, well above the rest of the field. Shelby’s javelin throw landed at 141’63 for the win.
The boys team took a trio of silvers. Sergio Moreno hit just a fraction behind Southern Boone’s Brandon Sefton in the triple jump. Rohrbach’s heave of 43’47 in shot put was outdistanced only by Tyler Hilgedick of Southern Boone. And Dakota Cash crossed the line three-tenths behind Blake Dapkus – also from Southern Boone – in the 100 meter dash.
Cash took third in the 200 and was part of the third bronze 4x100 team with Matthew Blair, Austin Hoover and Trevor Ray.
Cash, Ray, Gavin Rasmussen and Tristin Webb gave the Thunderbirds a third in the 4x200, as well.
Brendan Reinhard’s third in high jump might have ended up silver. He tied for second with Southern Boone’s Coy Gulich, but lost in the jump off. Silas Barker came in fourth.
Lane Kimbley beat a pack of runners from Capital City and California for the final podium spot in the 3,200.
Moreno had a fourth in the long jump, with Webb just behind. The North Callaway 4x800 crew of Reinhard, Kimbley, Grant Eichman and Noah Scrogum also brought in a fourth.
