Lady Coyoyes stay alive in Sturgeon Tournament with 36-31 win vs Westran
The Paris girls needed a win to survive until today in the Sturgeon Tournament, and that is exactly what they got.
The Lady Coyotes held off Westran 36-31 on Wednesday to advance to the consolation final against New Bloomfield (4-14) at 11 a.m. today. They jumped ahead of Westran 16-9 after the first quarter, holding the Lady Hornets to 22 percent shooting from the field.
Westran (5-13) outscored Paris (5-13) by two points in each of the middle quarters, cutting its deficit to three points. The Lady Coyotes responded with a 10-8 fourth quarter.
Sophia Crusha had an excellent shooting night from the perimeter for Paris, finishing with a game-high 14 points and going 4-for-8 from 3-point territory. Reese Sutton was that presence inside as she had 11 points and 18 rebounds, and Emma Ashenfelter tallied six steals.
Dylan Perry led Westran with 10 points, and Kate Hollman followed with eight points and nine rebounds.
The boys (8-9) defeated Sturgeon (5-13) 62-44 on Thursday to advance to today's consoltion final at 12:30 p.m. against Community R-6 (11-9).
Coyotes drop first-round game 64-35 to Class No. 5 New Franklin
The Paris boys had a tough draw on Tuesday in the Sturgeon Tournament first round.
The Coyotes lost 64-35 to Class 2 No. 5 New Franklin (17-1), falling behind 26-8 early.They played the state-ranked Bulldogs closer the rest of the way but couldn’t cut into the deficit.
Paris (7-9) turned the ball over 33 times to lead to 36 New Franklin points off turnovers as the Bulldogs beat the Coyotes on the offensive glass decisively, outrebounding Paris 38-12.
Mason Edwards led Paris with eight points, Alex Williams followed with seven points and 14 rebounds, and Colton Poddany and Walter Rucker each had six points.
Clayton Wilmsmeyer led New Franklin with 20 points and 13 rebounds, Drake Clark followed with 12 points and seven rebounds (all offensive), and Tanner Bishop finished with 10 points and two 3-pointers.
Lady Coyotes shown New Franklin size in 48-31 loss
The Paris girls are a team that likes to rely on quickness but had to deal with a bigger New Franklin team on Monday.
The Lady Coyotes lost its first round game in the Sturgeon Tournament 48-31, being outrebounded 45-28. New Franklin won on the defensive glass 29-18 and in the paint as it outscored the Lady Coyotes 22-10.
Paris trailed 11-7 after one and hung around 18-12 at halftime. Ultimately, New Franklin gained some distance in the fourth quarter to secure its victory.
Reese Sutton led Paris with 12 points and eight rebounds, Kameron Arnett followed with seven points and three steals, and Sophia Crusha had five points.
Lily Chitwood led New Franklin with a game-high 14 points, and Carly Dorson led the rebounding effort with nine boards to go along with seven points. KeBrea Fair finished with six points and eight rebounds.
