Ashenfelters lead Paris to 4-0 win against Harrisburg
The Ashenfelter sisters helped Paris win Monday’s pitcher’s duel at home.
The Lady Coyotes defeated Lewis and Clark Conference foe Harrisburg 4-0 to clinch a winning 5-3 conference record this season. Kennedy Ashenfelter struck out nine and allowed two hits in seven innings and had the game-winning RBI single in the fourth inning. Her catcher and sister, Emma Ashenfelter, had a two-RBI double, Maura Crusha had a RBI and Hope Sutherland went 2-for-3.
Paris (11-10) won four out of its final conference games after defeating Harrisburg (5-16, 3-5 L&C), with the only loss being 2-1 to Class 2 No. 7 Fayette.
The Lady Coyotes play at Class 1 reigning state champion Canton (15-10) at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Paris pair of missed opportunities difference in 52-44 loss at Knox County
Like most 8-man football games, there were many points scored between Paris and Knox County on Friday.
The Coyotes didn’t score on a couple of chances to lose 52-44 on the road. Paris (2-4) couldn’t make it to the end zone in the middle of the second half, despite advancing the ball to the red zone, and then couldn’t convert on a fourth down and instead allowed an interception while the game was still tied at 44 in the fourth quarter.
Still, Paris had 353 yards of total offense compared with Knox County’s 283 yards. The Coyotes even almost matched their season passing total, head coach Cody Carney said, as they had 240 yards through the air going in and Colton Kendrick threw for 210 yards on 14-for-20 passing. A pair of moments loom large, though.
“There were a lot of big plays (Friday),” Carney said. “There were some big defensive plays too. The ball just didn’t bounce our way tonight.”
Carney said Knox County (1-5) was effective running the ball, amassing 247 yards. The Eagles’ quarterback Collin Hayes ran for 144 yards on 25 carries, scoring twice on the ground and twice through the air. Gatlin Fountain and Reid Ragsdale stayed busy on defense with 21 and 12 total tackles, respectively.
Fountain ran for 61 yards on 10 carries, including a 25-yard touchdown. Kendrick ran for 100 yards on 14 carries but made some key plays in the second half with his arm, hitting Aron McCain for a 21-yard touchdown and finding Brady Shivers on a 48-yard score.
“We tried to exploit their defensive backfield a little bit, find some holes there,” Carney said. “The boys did a good job of that (Friday).”
Paris hosts Braymer with Breckenridge (6-0) at 7 p.m. Friday.
