Park Foundation secures big check for pickleball courts

Posted

The Mexico Park Foundation has secured enough funding to begin a project that would supply lighting to the city’s pickleball courts at Fairgrounds Park.

Mexico Parks and Recreation Director Chad Shoemaker told the Ledger the Park Foundation requested the Edmonston Foundation for the project. The Edmonston Foundation responded to the request with a check for $20,000.

“We don’t know exactly what it will cost but it’s probably a good portion of the dollars we need to get the project done,” Shoemaker said. “We weren’t going to design a project without the funds but we’ll start doing it now.”

Shoemaker said the city has an active tennis association that has been a “blessing” to the community. The group has helped build post-tension courts that hold up much better than the city’s old asphalt courts along with two pickleball courts.

“Pickleball has gotten so popular that daylight hours is hardly enough for the outside play,” Shoemaker said.

Shoemaker said the potential project will have to be a part of the 2023-24 budget that begins Oct. 1. He said the city is lucky to have so many agencies and private citizens who are interested in recreation. Otherwise, many of the projects wouldn’t happen.

“That’s an awesome thing that people have wants in this community to be able to recreate and public and private partnerships certainly make it possible for us to do things we wouldn’t be able to do without that,” Shoemaker said.
