The Mexico Ledger has welcomed Dennis Sharkey as its new editor.

Sharkey, a Kansas City area native, has a lengthy career working for publications on the western side of the state. He will be responsible for directing the newspaper’s news coverage and editorial focus.

Sharkey has spent time as an editor at the Platte County Citizen, Mound City News and Oskaloosa Independent. At all of those publications, he was the primary writer/photographer and covered multiple school districts, similar to his duties at The Ledger.

Most recently, he launched and operated an online website that covered four high schools in the north Kansas City area.

Sharkey has a journalism degree from Northwest Missouri State University.

“We’re excited to welcome Dennis to our staff,” Publisher Tim Schmidt said. “We feel Dennis has the newspaper and journalism background that will help keep The Ledger an important part of the communities we cover.”

The Ledger has continued to see growth in its print and online readership, both draws for Sharkey who is eager to get out in the community and share local stories.

“The city of Mexico and Audrain County have a long and rich history and The Ledger has been there all along the way,” Sharkey said. “It’s my hope to continue to add to that history. A great local newspaper is critical to keeping readers informed but it also is a great place to showcase all of the things happening in the community.

“My goals are to not only keep our readers informed but to also lift their spirits with entertaining and thoughtful stories and photos.”

Sharkey can be reached by emailing editor@mexicoledger.com or by calling 573-581-1111.
