The Bulldogs trampled Fulton 9-0 on Wednesday to wrap up their road swing, with the JV adding to the Hornet’s misery with a 4-0 sweep.
“It was an awesome showing from top to bottom,” said head coach Tony Senor of the conference win.
Mexico recorded four shutouts in varsity play. Randy Hernandez and Brendan McKeown blanked Fulton’s Isaiah Schnoebelen and Beau Edwards 10-0 to lead off the match. McKeown, Carter McIntosh and Ryan Pemberton also brought 10-0 brooms in singles.
Hernandez fenced with Schnoebelen again in singles and dispatched him 10-3. Hayden Frazier in the two slot beat Edwards 10-2. And Bryson Stuehmer was able to hold off Nathan Lowry 10-4.
The tightest battle of the day was the doubles set between Mexico’s Frazier and Pemberton, facing Ryan Lowe and Dhruv Bhakta. The Bulldog pair pulled away 10-5.
McIntosh and Stuehmer took their doubles set 10-1.
On the JV side, Andrew Stephens and Matthew Huemann tossed a 10-0 whitewash. Noah Harlan paired with Dominic McKeown for a 10-1 win.
And it was gutsy 8-4 victories for both Declan Gleeson with Andrew Pemberton and Nathan Bull with Zeven Ruiz.
Bulldogs too much for Columbia Independent
The Bulldogs bounced back from a disappointing 5-4 loss at Kirksville last Friday, knocking off Columbia Independent 7-2 as the team’s road trip continued on Monday.
Coach Tony Senor called it a solid team performance.
In the two through six singles matches, Mexico conceded only one set. And they blanked the Lions in two of the three doubles contests.
Randy Hernandez, who as the Bulldogs’ number one always faces stiff competition, suffered setbacks in singles and doubles – although the doubles encounter was tight. The pairing of Hernandez and Stuehmer clung to Columbia’s Jackson Coyle and Eric Dirksmeyer, eventually failing 8-4 in a spirited skirmish.
The rest of the evening was a rout. Carter McIntosh dropped one game to Mark McClary in singles, claiming an 8-1 win.
Haden Frazier, Brendan McKeown, Ryan Pemberton and Stuehmer all pitched 8-0 shutouts to close out singles.
In the opening doubles round, Frazier and Pemberton downed their opponents 8-0, as did McIntosh and McKeown to atone for the lone doubles defeat.
“This is the fun and busy part of the season,” Senor said. “We’re looking forward to districts and our conference tournament.”
