Moenaisa Sidique began running in middle school. As Mexico High’s head track and field coach Buck Green recalls it, she was a reluctant volleyball player who he coaxed into trying cross country.
“There was a meet the next day and she got second,” he said.
After Sidique wraps up her career for the Bulldogs, she will change colors. On Thursday she signed a national letter of intent to run for Westminster College in Fulton.
“I think they are going to push me harder,” Sidique said of the transition to college track. “But my coaches her pushed me hard, so it will be all right.”
On Tuesday at the Thunderbird Invitational in North Callaway, Sidique ran a 1:00.52 in the 400 meter dash to win the event. Over the weekend, Westminster’s Kate Rable recorded a 1:14.87 in the 400 at the Lincoln University Open – the Blue Jays quickest time so far this season.
Sidique said she was attracted to Westminster for its atmosphere. She liked the campus, the people and the educational opportunities. Classmates Dante Billups and Shannon Dorsey recently signed to play football for the school.
“It was hard because I had offers from other schools,” she said. “But I have to do what’s right for my running career.”
Her career has been impressive since she tried cross country in middle school. Green notes that Sidique is versatile, able to run sprints and some distances, as well as stints in the relays.
He also pointed to her drive.
Freshman year Sidique made All-State. But the next season she fell short.
“That made her hungry,” Green said.
