Six Community girls headed to state

Brianna Beamer is heading to state for a second time in the girls 800 meter run. And she will have three more opportunities for a state crown as part of Community R-6’s powerful relay squads.

The Trojans’ quartet of Beamer, Emma Angel, Sarah Angel and Emmi Johnson earned a trip to Jefferson City in the girls 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400, finishing fourth, fourth and second, respectively, at the Class 1 Section 1 meet hosted by South Callaway on Saturday.

Joining them at state will be Paige Meyer in the high jump and Victoria DiSalvo, running the 300 meter hurdles.

Beamer finished fourth in the 800, covering the distance in 2:35.83. The top four finishers in each event advanced.

Community’s 4x400 team ran a lightning pace, recording a time of 4:38.25 to grab the silver. Meyer, who has the potential to clear the 5’0 mark, topped out at 4’8.25 on Saturday. That put her just an inch behind Kendell Holweg of Delta, who recorded a final jump of 4’9.50.

DiSalvo spent her day chasing Wellsville-Middletown’s Bethany Slovensky. In the 100 meter hurdles, DiSalvo’s time of 18.63 left her dangling on the cusp of state in fifth spot. Slovensky took the top spot.

In the 300 meter hurdles DiSalvo found redemption. Her 52.89 was enough for fourth and a state offering. Slovensky won again, pacing at 48.75.

Two Community boys just missed out on a trip to state. Dylan Hoyt was fifth in the 1,600. His 5:01.36 mark was just three ticks behind winner Caleb Horman of Vienna.

Meanwhile Justin Duenke’s throw in shot put landed in an equally tight pack bunched around the 38 foot mark. His toss of 38’08.25 fell seven inches shy and of the win and one spot out of contention.

The Class 1 state meet takes place May 22 in Jefferson City.
