Slow-moving train upends vehicle from tracks

Posted

On Saturday morning at the Jefferson Street railroad crossing, a slow-moving train crashed into a tractor-trailer that hadn’t quite cleared the tracks on its stop.

At 8:30 a.m., the Mexico Public Safety Department (MPSD) received a call in reference to a crash just north of Arnold Funeral Home.

Responding personnel found that Mark Taylor, 63, of Belleville, Illinois, was operating a 2015 International semi-truck, delivering diesel fuel to the depot.

Taylor was attempting to turn around as a slow-moving train approached, but he stopped, leaving the back of the trailer near the edge of the tracks.

The train struck the trailer and pushed it about 100 feet before it came to rest.

Audrain Ambulance District transported Taylor to University Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

The train and tracks were inspected by railroad personnel and the crossings at Jefferson and Calhoun streets were opened around 12:38 p.m.

The diesel fuel was transferred off the trailer and the tractor-trailer was removed from the scene around 5:35 p.m.

Less than five gallons total of diesel fuel and gasoline were spilled as a result of the crash.
