The Mexico girls tennis team has opened the fall season with one victory in its first three matches. The Bulldogs opened the year with a 6-3 win over Boonville on Aug. 31. They followed with an 8-1 setback to Marshall on Sept. 1 and a 5-4 loss to Capital City on Sept. 3.
In the season opener, Mexico won five of the six singles matches and two of the three doubles matches. Picking up wins were Katie Gooch, Lily Yager, Jocelyn Jarquin-Garcia, Estrella Ramirez-Lopez and Anna Auwarter. In doubles action, the teams of Gooch and Auwarter and Jarquin-Garcia and Ramirez-Lopez.
In junior varsity action, the following doubles teams won their matches: Haydet Herrera-Garcia and Winona Whelan, Herrera-Garcia and Whelan, Messiah Simpson and Amelia Denham, and Simpson and Herrera.
The following day, the Bulldogs managed only one win against Marshall, a perennial strong program. The lone match victory came from Jarquin-Garcia and Ramirez-Lopez in doubles action.
In the junior varsity match, Messiah Simpson had Mexico’s lone win.
On Sept. 3, the Bulldogs competed against a strong team in Capital City and narrowly fell in a 5-4 setback. In singles action, Gooch, Yager, Jarquin-Garcia and Ramirez-Lopez recorded wins. The lone doubles win came from Kennemore and Yager in an exciting 7-5 tiebreaker.
In the junior varsity match, Cadance Brinker and Denham had wins in their singles matches.
